“I am the teacher. I am not the model for what each individual voice “should” sound like.”

Teaching.

When an actor knows how a character breathes, they understand one of the most necessarycomponents to their existence.

At the heart of my acting philosophy is a desire to help students discover the impulses that vocally, physically, and mentally drive their characters to react. To begin the actor’s training, I lead students through the process of breaking down a character by introducing the components of actions, tactics, objectives, and stakes through interactive partner exercises and Meisner Repetition. With a strong foundation in place, students discover that their acting is a process that can be repeated, modified, and continually expanded for any given circumstance.

“The voice we use to speak, laugh, cry, shout, scream, yawn, and call out is the same voice we use to sing.”

– Joan Melton

Within my specialization of theatrical voice and speech pedagogy, I fully acknowledge the reality that, up until now, most of our history and training models are comprised of Eurocentric, Anglo-American references. These views were derived from an outdated “standard” educational system that was primarily intended for straight, white male individuals. This historic view certainly does not reflect the beautiful diversity I hear and see in my classrooms today. On the contrary, I believe each person has a unique story to share, and I am committed to creating an environment that is inclusive and empowering for every student.

“Taking Colton’s breathing and vocal course was a needed revisit to the foundations of being a performing artist. His ability to assess where you are on your performance journey and strengthen your basic skills in a way that doesn’t take you completely back to a beginner’s level, is unique and hard to find when dealing with vocal coursework. He makes each lesson feel engaging and individualized, and the results were evident as I continued to work on pieces both in his class and in a theatrical setting. I cannot recommend his course enough, and I continually encourage others to work with Colton when they get the chance.”

Private Student, 2022

“Colton helped me with a recent audition for “In the Next Room.” Through his help I ended up getting the part!!! He knows his stuff, you should reach out to him before your next audition!!

Private Student, 2021

“Colton was thrown into the course about halfway through the semester, but he was able to keep the course organized and add his own [flare to] the course. I do not blame Colton for the fact that this course didn’t go as in depth as I hoped, if he had been in the instructor position the entire semester I feel as though I would have been very happy with what I took from this course…This course was sort of a mess, but I think Colton made due with the mess that it was, and his efforts and understanding are appreciated… We had many professors this semester due to illness, but Colton did a great job jumping in and creating strong course material for our class.”

OSU Voice and Movement 2019

“Colton was a great section leader. He was always enthusiastic about the topics and helpful to answer any questions we had regarding the course/course material…when I approached him with questions about it (feedback), he was always willing to discuss it and clarify.”
